Article history: Received 4 February 2011 Received in revised form 1 June 2011 Accepted 2 June 2011 Electron avalanches are the main constituent of electrical discharges in the atmosphere. However, the electromagnetic radiation field generated by a single electron avalanche growing in different field configurations has not yet been evaluated in the literature. In this paper, the electromagnetic radiation fields created by electron avalanches were evaluated for electric fields in pointed, co-axial and spherical geometries. The results show that the radiation field has a duration of approximately 1–2 ns, with a rise time in the range of 0.25 ns. Thewave-shape takes the form of an initial peak followed by an overshoot in the opposite direction. The electromagnetic spectrum generated by the avalanches has a peak around 10 Hz. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

One of the interesting Laser-Plasma phenomena, when the laser power is high and ultra intense, is the generation of large amplitude plasma waves (Wakefield) and electron acceleration. An intense electromagnetic laser pulse can create plasma oscillations through the action of the nonlinear pondermotive force. electrons trapped in the wake can be accelerated to high energies, more than 1 TW. Of t...

As organisms exposed to various abiotic and biotic environmental impacts, plants are able to recognize and respond to their surrounding environment with high specificity. Electromagnetic field radiation is an important effective stress factor on growth and development of plants. Our research focused on plants grown from wet pretreated seeds with low frequency electromagnetic field exposure comp...

Silicon avalanche photodiodes (APD) have been studied extensively as a photodetector candidate for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS detector at LHC. This report presents measurements of the latest generation APDs made by Hamamatsu and EG&G, with particular emphasis on spectral response, excess noise factor, response to charged particles and radiation hardness. The strategy for the fut...
متن کاملA Study of Electromagnetic Radiation from Monopole Antennas on Spherical-Lossy Earth Using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method
Radiation from monopole antennas on spherical-lossy earth is analyzed by the finitedifference time-domain (FDTD) method in spherical coordinates. A novel generalized perfectly matched layer (PML) has been developed for the truncation of the lossy soil. For having an accurate modeling with less memory requirements, an efficient "non-uniform" mesh generation scheme is used. Also in each time step...
متن کاملActive Remote Detection of Radioactivity Based on Electromagnetic Signatures
This paper presents a new concept for the remote detection of radioactive materials. The concept is based on the detection of electromagnetic signatures in the vicinity of radioactive material and can enable stand-off detection at distances greater than 100 m. Radioactive materials emit gamma rays which ionize the surrounding air. The ionized electrons rapidly attach to oxygen molecules forming...
